Barcelona, the city of football’s past, is returning to the pitch with its first ever match against a professional side.
A match against the reigning La Liga champions will take place on Thursday, July 29, at the Camp Nou, with the match being streamed live on the club’s official channel.
“We know it will be a great game,” said coach Tito Vilanova, who has won two titles with Barcelona, adding that he is ready to do whatever is necessary to win the match.
“There are two games on Thursday and we need to find out the best way to play.”
The match will take the place of the first leg in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, which was marred by the death of defender José Antonio Reyes.
The two sides will play at the Santiago Bernabeu on July 30 and 31, respectively, for a place in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinal, both sides will take on Real Madrid, who won their first match of the season last Wednesday, while in the final, Barça will face Barcelona’s rivals, who will play in the third leg of their Copa Libertadores semifinal on Saturday.
